The short answer

What is Ultherapy, and is it right for you?

Ultherapy is a non-surgical lifting treatment that uses micro-focused ultrasound with real-time imaging (MFU-V). It heats the SMAS, the deep supportive layer tightened in a surgical facelift, and the dermis above it to about 60–70°C, triggering new collagen and a gradual lift over 2–3 months, with no incisions.

At YAAN Clinic in Gangnam, Seoul, Ultherapy is performed with Ultherapy Prime, the newest system. It is used for jowls, a soft jawline, brow heaviness and neck laxity, from ₩1,500,000 for 300 shots. One session a year is typical.

Ultherapy vs Ultherapy Prime

Ultherapy Prime is the first major upgrade to the Ultherapy platform in around a decade. The ultrasound energy and the three treatment depths are the same proven technology; what changes is how clearly the doctor can see, and how quickly and precisely the treatment is delivered.

  • Sharper imaging. A larger, higher-resolution screen shows skin, fat, SMAS and bone more clearly before each line.
  • Deeper view. Visualisation reaches up to about 8 mm, which helps when skin and fat thickness vary across the face.
  • Faster sessions. Quicker processing shortens treatment time, which most patients find more comfortable.
  • Same three transducers. 1.5 mm, 3.0 mm and 4.5 mm depths, chosen per area by your doctor.

Honest suitability

Who Ultherapy suits, and who it doesn't

We would rather tell you what you don't need. These are general guides; your doctor confirms suitability after examining you.

Often a good fit

  • Early to moderate jowls and a softening jawline
  • Heavy or drooping brows
  • Loose skin under the chin and on the neck
  • People who want a lift without surgery or downtime
  • Yearly maintenance from the mid-30s onward

Probably not the first choice

  • Advanced sagging with excess skin, where surgery may help more
  • Very thin faces with little fat, where deep heat is not ideal
  • Mainly fine lines and texture, where Sofwave or Potenza may suit
  • Mainly volume loss, where fillers help more
  • Pregnancy, open wounds or infection in the area

Ultherapy treatment areas

Shots are distributed by area and depth, not spread evenly. These are the three zones patients ask about most.

Ultherapy treatment area: front cheeks and nasolabial folds
Mid-face

Front cheeks & nasolabial folds

Supports flattened front cheeks and softens the fold from nose to mouth by tightening the tissue above it.

Ultherapy treatment area: side cheeks, jowls and double chin line
Lower face

Side cheeks, jowls & double chin

The most requested zone: lifts the side cheek and jowl and firms the line under the chin.

Ultherapy treatment area: sagging jawline
Jawline

Sagging jawline

Redefines a jawline blurred by loss of elasticity, often combined with the under-chin and upper neck.

Brows and the eye area are treated with a dedicated plan; see Eye Ultherapy. For the neck, see non-surgical neck lift.

How it works

Ultrasound you can see

Imaging first. The same handpiece that delivers energy also produces a live ultrasound image. The doctor confirms the layer on screen, then treats, so energy lands in tissue that lifts and stays away from bone and vessels.

Three depths. A 4.5 mm transducer reaches the SMAS, the layer surgeons tighten in a facelift. 3.0 mm and 1.5 mm transducers treat the deep and superficial dermis for firmness and fine lines.

Precise heat. Each shot creates a row of tiny thermal points at about 60–70°C, the range in which collagen contracts and the body starts building new collagen. The skin surface is left intact.

Collagen response. The first effect is contraction of existing collagen. Over the following 2–3 months new collagen and elastin form, which is when the visible lift develops.

Ultherapy treatment depths Cross-section of skin showing Ultherapy transducers treating at 1.5 mm in the superficial dermis, 3.0 mm in the deep dermis and 4.5 mm at the SMAS layer above muscle. 1.5 mm 3.0 mm 4.5 mm Epidermis Dermis Fat SMAS Muscle fine lines, firmness structural lift

Before

Collagen loss, looser support

With age the collagen network thins and the skin and SMAS lose tension, so tissue descends.

Focused points of heat

Ultrasound passes through the surface and creates precise thermal points at the planned depths.

Recovery & results

What to expect, month by month

  • Same day

Skin may look slightly flushed for a few hours. Make-up and normal activities are fine.

  • Day 1–3

Mild swelling, tingling or tenderness to touch along the jaw and cheekbones is common and settles on its own.

  • Week 2–4

Tenderness fades. Some people notice early firmness as existing collagen has tightened.

  • Month 2–3

The main result: a visible lift and cleaner contour as new collagen forms.

  • Month 3–6

Collagen remodelling continues; this is a good time for a follow-up photo comparison.

  • 12 months

Typical duration. Many patients repeat once a year to maintain the result.

Aftercare

  • Avoid saunas, hot baths, hot yoga and firm facial massage for 1–2 days.
  • Use a gentle cleanser and moisturiser, and SPF 50 every morning.
  • Skip alcohol on the day of treatment if you bruise or swell easily.
  • Tell the clinic if you notice marked swelling, welts, numbness or pain that worsens.

What changes the price

  • Number of shots. Ultherapy is priced by shots (lines), so a larger area or more passes costs more.
  • Areas treated. Lower face only, full face and neck, or an added eye and brow plan.
  • Genuine consumables. Each transducer has a fixed number of lines; ask any clinic to confirm the device and shot count you are paying for.
  • Combination care. Adding skin tightening, contouring or recovery treatments is optional and quoted separately.

Ultherapy vs other lifting treatments

No single device is best for everyone. This is how our doctors usually explain the differences.

Ultherapy and Thermage work on different layers, so they are commonly combined. Compare all options on our non-surgical facelift and energy lifting pages.

Safety

Side effects and risks

Ultherapy has been used worldwide for more than a decade and is cleared by the US FDA for lifting the brow, the under-chin and the neck, and for improving lines on the décolleté. It is still a medical procedure, and it should be planned and performed by a physician.

At YAAN Clinic the doctor sets the plan, checks the tissue on screen in real time, and adjusts energy for thin or sensitive areas.

Common and temporary

  • Redness for a few hours
  • Mild swelling, tingling or tenderness for several days

Less common

  • Bruising or small raised welts
  • Temporary numbness in a small area

Rare

  • Superficial burns
  • Temporary weakness of a facial muscle from nerve irritation
  • Unwanted loss of facial fat, a reason very lean faces are assessed carefully

FAQ

Ultherapy questions, answered

How much does Ultherapy cost in Seoul, Korea?
At YAAN Clinic in Gangnam, Ultherapy Prime costs ₩1,500,000 for 300 shots (lower face focus) and ₩3,000,000 for 600 shots (full face and neck). Eye Ultherapy is ₩500,000 per 100 shots. Prices are in Korean won; confirm VAT and the treatment area at consultation.
What is the difference between Ultherapy and Ultherapy Prime?
Ultherapy Prime is the newest generation of the same micro-focused ultrasound technology. It keeps the three treatment depths (1.5 mm, 3.0 mm and 4.5 mm) and adds a larger, sharper imaging screen, deeper visualisation of the tissue and faster treatment. YAAN Clinic treats with Ultherapy Prime.
Is Ultherapy the same as HIFU?
Not exactly. Both use focused ultrasound, but Ultherapy is micro-focused ultrasound with visualisation (MFU-V): the doctor sees the skin layers on a live ultrasound screen before each line of energy. Most HIFU devices, such as Shurink Universe, treat without imaging and cost less.
How many shots of Ultherapy do I need?
It depends on face size, skin thickness and the areas treated. As a guide, 300 shots usually covers the lower face and jawline, and 600 shots covers the full face and neck. The eye and brow area is planned separately in units of 100 shots. Your doctor maps the exact number after examining you.
Does Ultherapy hurt?
Most people feel deep heat and brief prickling, strongest over bony areas such as the jawline. Numbing cream is applied before treatment, and the doctor can adjust energy and pacing. Ask about additional pain relief options at consultation.
When will I see results from Ultherapy?
Some people notice early firmness within weeks, but the main lift develops gradually over 2 to 3 months as new collagen forms, and can continue improving for up to 6 months.
How long does Ultherapy last?
Results typically last around a year, sometimes longer, depending on age, skin quality and lifestyle. Many patients repeat the treatment once a year for maintenance.
Is there downtime after Ultherapy?
There is little to no downtime. Mild redness, swelling or tenderness along the jaw can last a few days. Most people return to normal activities the same day and can wear make-up afterwards.
What are the side effects and risks of Ultherapy?
Common, temporary effects are redness, swelling, tenderness and tingling. Less common effects include bruising, small welts or temporary numbness. Rare effects include burns or temporary nerve weakness. Real-time imaging and physician-led treatment are used to keep energy away from bone, vessels and nerves.
Who should not have Ultherapy?
Ultherapy is not suitable during pregnancy, over open wounds, active infection or severe cystic acne in the treatment area, and it needs care around implants or fillers in the area. Very lean faces and advanced sagging with excess skin are often better served by other treatments.
Can I combine Ultherapy with Thermage, fillers or Botox?
Yes. Ultherapy lifts the deep SMAS layer, while Thermage FLX tightens the skin surface, so they are often paired. Fillers, skin boosters and Botox address volume, skin quality and muscle movement and can be planned around Ultherapy by your doctor.
Can I fly after Ultherapy?
Usually yes. There are no incisions, and most travellers fly home the next day. Avoid saunas, hot baths and firm facial massage for 1 to 2 days and use SPF 50.
What is the best age to start Ultherapy?
There is no fixed age. It is most often chosen from the mid-30s onward, when early jowls, a softer jawline or brow heaviness appear, and it is used for maintenance in the 40s to 60s.
Do the doctors at YAAN Clinic speak English?
Yes. Consultations, treatment plans, prices and aftercare are provided in English at YAAN Clinic in Gangnam, Seoul. You can send photos and travel dates in advance through the consultation form or WhatsApp.
