Dermatologist vs Aesthetic Clinic in Korea

Walk down a Gangnam street and every second sign says “skin”. But in Korea, the wording on the sign tells you who is actually treating you.

Quick answer

In Korea, a clinic whose name includes “피부과 의원” (dermatology clinic) is run by a board-certified dermatology specialist. Clinics that list dermatology only as a “treatment subject” (진료과목: 피부과) are run by licensed doctors from other backgrounds, such as general practitioners or plastic surgeons. Both can be legitimate; the right choice depends on whether you have a medical skin condition or an aesthetic goal.

Two types of clinic

Dermatology specialist clinic Aesthetic / cosmetic clinic
Sign wording “OO 피부과 의원” “OO 의원” or “Clinic”, with 진료과목: 피부과
Doctor Dermatology specialist (four-year dermatology residency after medical school and internship) Licensed physician; may be a specialist in another field (e.g. plastic surgery)
Best for Eczema, psoriasis, infections, suspicious moles, prescription-driven care Botox, fillers, lasers, lifting, skin boosters

Which do you need?

  • A medical skin problem (rash, persistent acne needing medication, changing moles): see a dermatology specialist.
  • An aesthetic goal (lifting, pigmentation, texture, injectables): an experienced aesthetic doctor with a strong track record in that procedure can be a good choice. Ask how often they perform it.
